Rye
Incorporated in 1289 and once a seaport, Rye played a vital role both in the defence against invaders and as a trading centre. It's cobbled streets and medieval houses once echoed to the sounds of smugglers and revenue men, and fine trading vessels were to be found unloading at the warehouses on the quay. Today Rye is a bustling market town with some of the finest examples of ancient architecture and cobbled streets in England. It can also boast a museum, Norman Church, potteries, art galleries and boutique shopping as well as many good restaurants and friendly pubs.
Rye provides the perfect starting point for visiting Bodium, Canterbury, Battle and Hastings.
